American Folk Music in Black and White
Paying homage to the influential musicians of the 1960s and 1970s, Clazzical Notes and Boston Court present a folk music program showcasing the contributions of black and white female folk artists. Angelica Rowell and Joanna Wallfisch present new interpretations of traditional folk and original compositions.

JOANNA WALLFISCH, VOCALIST-COMPOSERLondon-born vocalist-composer, multi-instrumentalist, author, and painter, Joanna Wallfisch heralds from generations of professional musicians. Music and creativity have been the through line of the Wallfisch family and integral to Joanna's life and career. Joanna is master in the art of live vocal looping, and plays the guitar, ukulele, charango, piano and flute. She composes for ensembles including string quartets, woodwinds, and choir. Joanna sings with the Laude Ensemble, works regularly as a session vocalist, and is an early childhood music educator for non-profit Urban Voices Project. In August 2023, her sixth record is out on Galileo Music. Alongside Joanna’s musical career she is a passionate educator and takes her songwriting and teaching skills to outreach programs, schools, and colleges. She is on the songwriting and vocal faculty at Los Angeles College of Music and runs her own early childhood music program, Little Whale Music.

ANGELICA ROWELL, MEZZO SOPRANOAngelica Rowell, mezzosoprano, holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from UC Irvine. She is a singer, actress, and creative writer who strives to create works that open doors for the marginalized and initiate a critical dialogue for systemic change and social awareness. In fall 2018, Rowell was the mezzosoprano soloist for a new commission by Pulitzer Prize Winner Ellen Reid as part of the LA Phil’s centennial celebration. The previous year, she acted as the mezzosoprano workshop soloist for Reid’s Dreams of a New World, commissioned by the LA Master Chorale. She has worked with composers such as Morten Lauridsen and Moira Smiley in residency and participates in musicals and theatre across Los Angeles.

ACCOMPANISTS
MOLLY PEASE, VOCALISTMolly Pease uses improvisation and extended vocal techniques to achieve an ethereal sound described by Emerging Indie Bands as “not of this world” and draws listeners in with memorable melodies and textural harmonic soundscapes. She is inspired by nature and speaks honestly about mental health in her music. Molly completed her MFA in Jazz Studies at California Institute of the Arts in 2017 and received her BFA at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York.

CAREY FRANK, PIANOCarey Frank is an active touring performing artist, recording artist, music director, arranger, composer, teacher, and as a sideman with various musicians in all different genres. Carey received his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Piano Performance from the University of Central Florida and later received his Masters of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Carey is the adjunct jazz piano professor at El Camino College and part of the piano faculty at Los Angeles College of Music.

DAMON CARTER, PIANODamon Carter is a Los Angeles native recently returned home after living in Boston for over two decades. Pianist, educator, and songwriter Damon has performed on stages across the country and helped to mold the musical geniuses of the next generation. Most recently, Damon was appointed Campus Director of California College of Music in Pasadena, but when he isn’t leading the charge at CCM, he continues to produce music and write music method books. His most recent book, Classical Remix for The Recorder, reimagines classical pieces, and his most recent album, DC’s Official Millennial Soundtrack, can be found on all major streaming platforms. Damon holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Education Degree in School Administration from Cambridge College.
